Content Production Terms – Glossary

Pre-Production (Planning & Presentation)

  • Podcasting: Pre-recorded audio or video shows edited for on-demand playback (Spotify, YouTube, etc.).
  • Live Streaming: Real-time video broadcast with little to no delay. Often includes audience interaction and requires more technical setup.
  • Run of Show (ROS): Timeline or sequence of events during a production.
  • Segmented Content: Breaking a longer video into shorter, reusable clips.
  • Hook: A strong opening that grabs attention.
  • Intro/Outro: Branded elements that begin and end the video.
  • Copy (Script/Text): Written content used in the video or on-screen.
  • Set Dressing: Decorating the background for visual appeal.
  • Talent: On-camera individuals such as hosts or guests.
  • Call-to-Action (CTA): Prompt encouraging viewers to take an action, like subscribing or visiting a website.
  • Branded Content Campaigns: Strategic creation of content that matches a marketing goal.

Production (Execution & Equipment)

  • Pre-Recorded: Captured in advance, then edited before being published.
  • Live-to-Tape: Recorded in real-time style but lightly edited before release.
  • Multi-cam: Using multiple cameras to capture various angles.
  • Switcher: Hardware or software to switch between video sources live.
  • Encoder: Converts video to a streamable format for online platforms.
  • Teleprompter: Displays a script on-screen for speakers to read while looking at the camera.
  • Lower Thirds: On-screen graphics that provide names, titles, or information.
  • Stream Destination: The platform where your content appears (e.g., YouTube, Facebook).
  • Simulcast: Streaming to more than one platform at the same time.
  • Virtual Set / Virtual Production: Digitally created or green screen-based environment.
  • Remote Guest Integration: Bringing in guests via platforms like Zoom with production-grade quality.
  • Green Screen / Keying: Replacing green screen backgrounds with custom visuals.
  • On-Air Light / Tally Light: Indicator lights showing when cameras are live.
  • Studio Lighting: Controlled lighting setup for a professional look.
  • Mic’d Up: Using lapel or boom microphones for clear audio.
  • Talkback System: Private audio channel between crew and talent during live shows.
  • Motion Graphics: Animated titles, transitions, or elements to enhance video.
  • Stream Deck / Control Surface: Device for real-time triggering of graphics and functions.
  • NDI (Network Device Interface): Video-over-IP tech allowing camera feeds across a network.
  • Latency: The delay between recording and viewing in a live stream.
  • Live Event Coverage: Professional recording or streaming of in-person events.

 

Post-Production (Editing & Delivery)

  • B-Roll: Supplementary footage used to support the main visuals.
  • Cold Open: Intro clip shown before the branding or title sequence.
  • Sizzle Reel: Short, high-energy highlight video.
  • Thumbnail: Preview image that represents the video.
  • Frame Rate (FPS): How many frames are shown per second in a video.
  • Aspect Ratio: The shape of the video frame (e.g., 16:9 or 9:16).
  • Render/Export: The final compilation of video into a playable file.
  • Raw Footage: Unedited video from the shoot.
  • Pickup Shots: Additional footage recorded after the main shot.
  • Chroma Key: Technical term for green screen background replacement.
  • ISO Recording: Recording each camera or audio source separately.
